Value Pack Renewal, Telecom Promotion

For those who got a new phone this Christmas and chose to have the Telecom SIM card offering a Value Pack promo that entitles you to free texts, free voice calls etc every month within the first 6 months of purchase -

The value pack promotion will only be renewed if you have at least $1 credit on your phone.

I have asked the question - how much is the minimum credit needed for the value pack to be renewed per month. The answer is $1.

The reps will not give you the answer directly... they might be told to do so... and I had to ask this question more than 3 times over the phone. When your credit is less than $10, you will get a notice from Telecom saying your value pack will only be renewed if you have "enough" credit. But they don't tell you how much. So without much thinking, you'd likely top up another $20.

So if you do not intend to use your $10 before the renewal, then just remember if you have at least $1, you will get renewed - free texts coming.

Internet connectivity in Queenstown

It amazes me how technology can be so restrictive. I am concerned that Telecom and Vodafone broadband do not allow customers to connect directly from their computers through to the splitter. It seems that these internet providers assume that computers are likely to use wifi these days that nobody does broadband cables anymore. This setup offers no back up solution in case there's no available cable or modem. It makes me feel as if these providers force the price of the modem into the package... which is most likely manufactured overseas for less than $10 each.

When Vodafone offers just $50 setup, remember, they have a $199 disconnection fee as you are obliged to enter a contract.
When Telecom offers no contract terms, cancel anytime setup, note that you have to pay $150+ connection fees. (note that this may not be the latest figures, it may have already increased)

Queenstown offers different, highly-priced, internet hot spots - HQwifi for example offers $40/gb as one package... running at 256kbps speed - great for checking email. Sure there are other options...

If intend to stay longer, and decide to sign up for a broadband contract, then expect service to be available within 3 business days - if you are within 5k radius around Queenstown CBD. The reps of Telecom and Vodafone are trained to say 10 to 15 business days activation to prevent issues and lower expectations. However, simply, the process is:
1. You sign up - over the phone or through a shop, this takes 10 minutes if you do not have to wait in queue
2. Your form gets submitted - entered to their database which takes 5 minutes
3. Your form gets approved if you're located within an area where service is available - within 4 hours, you will get an email. Nobody works on Saturdays and Sundays or holidays.
4. By the 2nd business day, you will get notification on when to expect your package. Pay attention to the details of this email as it includes the estimated time of activation (usually within 1 to 2 days maximum).
5. By the 3rd business day, a technician comes around your home to check your phone's dial tone. Then he informs the internet providers that he's been around and checked and request for broadband activation.

The courier requires a signature so you need to be home... waiting patiently. If you miss it, call them and arrange for redelivery or you can pick up your modem from the local sorting center.

The Season of Joy in Queenstown - best bargains

Tourism in Queenstown is buzzling. Compared to 2010, the city is more congested, flocked by international tourists, taking photos, enjoying the views, eating, dining, eating, dining!

Perhaps the hospitality industry will be the biggest earners this year. People enjoy food much more than over priced adventure tours.

A lot of people choose winter to go to Queenstown but it seems that a lot more summer visitors are having tons of fun.

As a regular tourist in Queenstown, I can recommend the following tips to make sure you do not spend more than you should.

1. There's no free wifi in this town. It's painful. So if you need wifi in Queenstown, you have to go to McDonalds in Frankton. You have to order more than $5 to get 1 hour free wifi - limited capacity so if you consume sooner, you lose connection.

The Patagonia chocolate place offers free wifi. The problem is you can really only stay 1 hour... mostly due to the embarrassment of occupying their limited tables and chairs for a long time. Since it's popular free wifi zone, so many people are using it which may explain the slow connectivity. It almost seems like it's worthless to try connecting. Hoewever, I must say even during less busy times, it seems the connection is still excruciatingly slow.

The other better place to get free wifi is Joe's Garage cafe - They also occassionally have coffee and cake promotions - just $5. Joe's garage free wifi is only up to 1 hour as well.

There is also the OVERPRICED HQwifi service which is only recommended if the connection is a matter of life and death! $40 / GB if you are stupid enough to get that plan. That's what I did... so I am telling you that if you even have to purchase wifi services through HQwifi - then get the $50/10 gb plan. To be fair with HQwifi, I have no idea why ther e isn't any other service provider that can provide more competitive rates.

New Zealand in general has very expensive internet connection anywhere you go.

2. The healthiest meals when traveling on budget which will keep you full would be the following options:
a. Subway - $5 for a 6 inch sub - very filling, fresh salad ingredients, there's own in the town center of Queenstown
b. Make your own sandwiches - drop by NEWWORLD at the Remarkables shopping center and buy 2 loaves of grain bread $3 each, some ham ($5 to $10) and sliced cheese($3), salad greens ($3), small sized mayo ($5), ketchup ($5), mustard ($5) and you can create yourself a real good sandwich. Total price for all of these would be around $30 1 loaf would be like 20 servings. Plus I'm sure there'd be a lot of ketchup, mayo and mustard left for other meals.
c. If you need water, bring your own water container. Every drinking-fountain in Queenstown provides clean water to drink. You will not die from it! So do not waste any more money buying 'bottled' water and pay $4/bottle that you can really get for free. If you didn't bring water bottle, then just buy 1, keep it and refill it with drinking fountain water. Drinking a lot of water while walking around Queenstown will guarantee that you will have less sore muscles the next day...
d. If you intend to prepare for a bigger meal for a group or for your family, you can simply buy $10 whole/roasted chicken from Newworld, add $3 basmati rice and make some salad.

Some less healthier, but great value options are:

If you "have" to have coffee, then go to McDonalds cafe. For 2 years in a row now, they offer $5 coffee and cake - the coffee is decent actually and they have different pastry options.

Since Hamill's restaurant is selling (as in the business is for sale on Trademe.co.nz for around half a million NZD), they are boosting their revenue and offering 2 gourmet pizzas for the price of 1. Yes this is just awesome value! They are located in Remarkables Shopping center. Their gourmet pizzas are so unique and tasty. Indicative price would be $22 for 1 pizza normally but since they have a promotion, you get 2. If you have not tried adding a banana on your pizza this is the time to challenge your taste! Prepare to be blown away!

In terms of Queenstown Accommodation - great value at Queenstown Motel Accommodation, new facilities, comfortable beds, very clean - they are located walking distance to town and offer accommodationa at $135 per night for 3 people. Other hotels would charge at least $155.

The beauty of Queenstown is you do not really need to spend on any tour packages with adventure trips. Here are free things to do in Queenstown:
1. Walking Trails - Queenstown has at least 14 walking trails! Enjoy views from all over the city - different views each trail, different experience. If you have your own mountain bikes, great but walking is good enough.
2. Walking around the CBD, the Wakatipu lake walk way are both great options. There are a lot of shops to visit (window shopping).
3. Rose Garden - Queenstown CBD - beautiful roses in bloom in summer and delightful cherry blossoms await you in Spring.
4. Picnic at Glenorchy - free to go to Glenorchy and enjoy a picnic with the familly. In summer, the lupins are there to amaze you - how can such a weed be so delicate...
5. Have a swim at the lake! Summer can be intensely hot in Queenstown and there's no stopping you from having a quick dip in the very clean lake! Great access to the lake from the Frankton arm and the Wakatipu area - in town.
6. Walk around Arrowtown - take photos, read about the history of early settlers!

What the All Blacks Win Meant to Me

I never really understood Rugby. As ignorant as it may seem I do not know the rules, don't know the players and don't understand the reason why people watch it. I was initially irritated at the media hype about rugby in NZ for 1 year before the Rugby World Cup which just ended last time.

The epic win - New Zealand 8 to 7 French. Some people said, if the All Blacks sucked a bit more, they would have lost. Really?

Let me tell you what the All Blacks win meant to me... as a worker, as an contractor, as a person living in a small country at the edge of the earth.

The NZ Rugby team is known to be one of the best in the world. However it has never won the world cup, number 1 spot for at least a decade. New Zealand invests a lot in this sport. The players seem really capable. And this time, this time they got the glory.

It seems to me that small business owners, employees, Kiwis all over the world who felt the harsh effects of recession, job loss, Christchurch earthquake, Pike River disaster have finally seen the light at the end of the tunnel... Yes there is something to be joyful about. Yes there is something NZ is good at, very capable of, and yes New Zealand can win.

After several years of drought, hard work and just living each day, hoping they can go through another day and wake up the next day, stronger.

Yes the All Blacks could have very well lost last night. The French team was passionate, raging. They were charging against NZ. For a moment, I thought they would win!

New Zealand won by just 1 point. Commentators on TV said it doesn't matter. They are right. Not because it's a token gesture but because New Zealand has been consistent. No loss in this season. I think their nerves got to them tremendously last night. I thought the French team was fantastic. I thought NZ could have done better. But NZ won - amidst all the pressure, the high expectations, the potential last minute self-doubt, the NZ team won. All through their hard ships, all through their debacles, as a team, as a country, as a people - New Zealand won. It is a great feeling. Officially, New Zealand has the cup.

Congratulations All Blacks and may your victory serve as inspiration to the rest of us.

Polar Blast One of NZ's worst

I am back in NZ rather at a bad time as the country has been under a massive polar blast straight from Antartica.

Bear in mind, NZ is closest to Antartica, an entire continent of ice. News networks in NZ announce that this year's winter has been the coldest and had the longest polar blast since the 1930's or at least the last 50 years. Many people interviewed on TV has never experienced this type of weather from Auckland to Invercargill.

Reports of hail, sleet and snow are common even from places like Auckland and Wanganui.

We don't live in an insulated house and we have high ceilings. So we live on an electric heater and 15 blankets, 6 for underlays and the rest to cover our bodies and our pillows. In case you haven't experienced a polar blast in an uninsulated house, you'd have to remember to cover your silk pillows with fleece blankets because if you don't they get extremely cold in the wee hours of the morning.

You'd have to also air out your house during the day even for just 10 minutes.

I can't wait for spring. Lots of cleaning and tidying up to do.

Despite the bitter cold, it's actually exciting and challenging to test the human spirit. Can my body withstand this cold temperature not to mention the wind the seems to cut through me? Well, I now have sinus infection but I am fighting it with loads of vegemite and overpriced vegetables and tomatoes.

$8/kg tomato price in winter so lesson learned, don't buy tomatoes in winter. Stick to what's in season and if you can buy food from the market instead of groceries, choose the market.

Drink only hot beverages, even hot water - if you drink cold water in a cold house, you'll just freeze.

Anyway I am back in town and would want to maximize my time and be most productive despite the weather.

Based on this report from Wanganui Chronicle - High death rates point to poverty Wanganui is known to have the most affordable housing markets in NZ. A lot of people are leaving the town. Poverty in NZ isn't the same as the common photos of children dying in Africa. Poverty in NZ is scene in areas where there are unruly kids, messy homes, overweight family members... the NZ govt subsidizes this kind of living ironically. These people do not have enough money for real hospital care, yet they can visit the local hospital for some kind of medical service provided by the government. It doesn't cure the root of the problem.

Cost of goods are very high in NZ, on top of GST. That's the reality of living in NZ. It's not a cheap country to live in. It's very expensive for expats, for tourists and locals. There is also no money in the economy. Many local businesses just do a more complex version of barter trade - or exchange of goods and services - I buy from you, you buy from me scenario. There's no real value created.

Bankruptcy for Serepisos

Serepisos is a business man / celebrity in NZ. He's been involved in "Trump like" TV shows shown all over NZ. He lives in luxury. He's not the only one. There are other seemingly prominent businessmen in NZ who live in incredible luxury, fancy Auckland homes, driving extravagant cars. You'd wonder. Where's the money in NZ? NZ is one of the countries with a wide gap of rich and poor. While the poor live in old homes during the cold bitter winter, the rich take for granted $100 meals.

What amazes is that many people in NZ live as if there is cash in the economy. I notice middle class invest in overpriced goods (mind you many retail items are severely over priced in New Zealand). Working class (immigrants) spend their money on expensive tours. I dare say some values are extremely misplaced in NZ.

Refunds for Non refundable flights

This is a sickening strategy of airlines.
Read this news from NZ Herald.

The worst airline service I have ever had is Jetstar. I don't know if it's their entire business policy and system that makes the employees on the plane and at the airport or their customer service (phone and at airport) the most unhelpful people in the service industry or they really just want to hire people who don't really care about the situation of the customer.

However the article above shows some chance to get your money back for trips you cancel over the phone in due time.

Good luck and my advise, if you can, never fly Jetstar.

Crime in NZ

For a small country with only 4 million people, it's big and serious news to hear about hostage taking incidents. This is the latest report of a hostage incident in Taranaki region.

NZ has a huge gap between rich and poor. There are so many non-resident property owners while so many people who are jobless and living in government subsidized homes.

What's positive though is that many beautiful sceneries in NZ can be seen by both rich and poor. I just think if the gap can be narrowed a little bit, there'd be less frustration from the less endowed.

Cheap Fares to New Zealand

On my way back to Wanganui. So from Asia to NZ, I choose Jetstar airlines. It's the cheapest option especially when the fares are on sale. You have to wait for a sale though. This happens ever 3 weeks. So don't worry if you miss out. Sale will happen again - depending if your flight is at least 1.5 months after you book. So my advise is you book earlier - 2 months before you leave, try shopping for fairs online. I had to compare the following airlines: Air Asia, Brunei Air and Jetstar. Jetstar is the clear winner so I guess I just have to endure their disappointing customer service staff, the grumpy girls at the check-in counter and their lethargic flight attendants. Well I understand it's a hard job but they are in the service industry...

Wanganui is a wonderful rural town. You'll be surprised to see how beautiful and quaint it is. Wanganui accommodation choices are diverse - from luxury accommodation to backpackers to nature lovers and corporate travelers.

What will be doing in Wanganui?
1. I'll definitely try canoeing the famous Whanganui River
2. For free wifi - I need to visit the library almost every day
3. I will walk around the famous Kowhai Park and Bason Botanic Gardens
4. I'll visit at least 3 cafes! I love coffee
5. Look for great value property - see if it's a nice place to live
6. Check out the developments in the business environment
7. Join Yoga! I'll be spending a couple of months in Wanganui

How to Cope in NZ Rural Areas

NZ is tight-knit community and if you are very close to your family (and leaving them behind, as you try to live in NZ) you'd definitely feel lonely.

Road to Glenorchy, Queenstown NZ

I've been living in NZ for the last 3 years now and I have some tips that would keep you sane:

1. Never stop looking for people who thinks like you do. You will have to look at local clubs, charities (if you are fond of that), bars, cafes.
a. Rural NZ do not offer too many jobs. Getting a job actually offers people some sort of social network.
b. Choose to live near the central business district of your rural town - to meet some tourists and some locals. It's romantic to think that you'll be in the middle of a rainforest or in front of a beach but if there are no people around, it's crazy to talk to sheep.

2. Start your own business - an online business is the easiest to setup. If you need help, you can approach Web Marketing NZ - foreign-owned... so provides competitive rates. Choose a business which you are passionate about - say photography, arts/hobbies. It's easier to target international market than local. As I said NZ is tight-knit, before locals spend on you, they would rather spend on people they have existing relationships with.

If you are not interested in setting up a business, then setup a blog. Create a chronicle of your activities as you meditate.

3. Exercise, exercise - NZ is best for walks - long walks. Keep your mind and body healthy everyday.

4. Get cable. Yes. You need to enjoy what you see on TV! There are only 2 channels if you don't and you'd have to compromise watching 1990's seasons of Friends... if you are a fan, I guess you won't mind watching it EVERY year.

5. Read. What's great about NZ is that it has local libraries filled with books you can borrow for free. It pays to keep the mind active in a very slow-moving community.

6. Try to make genuine friends. This is hard but it's worth it.

I notice that more business people patronize this motor lodge more than any type of tourist. Might be due to the FREE broadband that this motor lodge offers.

If you have the $$, the Aotea is the right choice for you, it's the best value for your money.

Quotable Value records show the weatherboard handyman's dream in the Southland town of Mataura (population 1740) was sold to an Auckland-based buyer in February for $7500, the lowest price in the country for the year ending June 30.

The pre-1914 Kana St home has a property value of $20,000 and annual rates of $1051.

Flowers in Winter

The flowers in Victoria garden (Wanganui) Winter Garden green house is one of the most beautiful collection of flowers in full bloom.

The Victoria garden has a man-made lake. There are 2 types of walks around the lake, one for 15 minutes and one for 25 minutes. It's an absolutely wonderful place to relax, detoxify from stress or simply spend time with family.

Wanganui is know to be the flower city... the town central has many hanging flower baskets in every shop.

Quite surprisingly, this little old English town, has rather the most affordable housing and real estate in New Zealand.

Wanganui Library

The Wanganui Library is by far the only local library I have been to in the North Island that offers free wifi. The library is at the back of the famous Sergeant Gallery.

The back of the library has a nice little hedged garden. The parking lot overlooks the wonderful view of the Wanganui River and Mt Ruapehu.

The library has modern facilities, a children's section, free computers, free newspapers and a nice wide collection of books that are helpful in different fields.

I particularly appreciate that the library officers allow people to be able to work in the library with their laptops. The people in Wanganui are very friendly and accommodating.

Wanganui is also called the River City. It's a holiday beach area (Castlecliff Beach). Having a close proximity to a long beach is one of the reasons why we chose to buy property in Wanganui.

Castlepoint Beach, Wairarapa

This is a majestic scene. The Castlepoint Beach, Wairarapa is 45 mins to 1 hr drive from Masterton. The road was a quiet, wonderful countryside.

We went here first of May 09 and it was already very cold. We had to go to Masterton for a BPW conference. Masterton is inland NZ, thus very cold at night time. We stayed at Acorn Lodge... which was a good value place to stay. The only issue is that the place was very cold.

The beach was magnificent. You can climb up the lighthouse and get a view of the pacific ocean. We didn't climb up the lighthouse though it would have been a romantic experience. It was terribly cold. I suggest going there again in summer.

Apples in Napier cost about $1.24 nzd per kilo. These apples are sold to supermarkets for 50cents a kilo.

New Zealand Property About to Soar

The leaders of Australia and NZ - PM's Kevin Rudd and John Keys - have moved a step towards a common market which will reduce the cost of flights between Australia and NZ.

The steps to be taken in the next year will see trans-Tasman customs and immigration abolished, so an entry into NZ is essentially an entry into Australia. This will spell a travel revolution for Australia & NZ, a property boom in areas, but it could also be expected to cause a flight of more people and jobs from NZ (in general). It will mean more tourism for NZ though. The implication is clear:
1. NZ Property around airport hubs like Christchurch, Palmerstown North, Dunedin, Wanganui, Hamilton are going to get a lot more expensive.
2. Queenstown-Wanaka are going to benefit the most because of its tourist icons and restricted land because of its mountainous geography.

The operating costs on trans-Tasman flights will fall by at least 30% and expect an increase in the number of new routes being flown. Jetstar says the savings for the airlines will be about $60 a passenger one-way.Typical prices can come down from $200-$210 to $140-150 [one-way]. Even greater reductions are possible by using the smaller airports. New destinations could include Avalon (Melb), Newcastle and Hamilton in Australia side and Hamilton, Palmerston North and Queenstown in NZ. The implication is that NZ property is looking very attractive for Australian buyers.

The common market is motivated by NZ's desire for greater access to the Australian market, as well as the airline's desire to stimulate travel by removing the government imposts (extra airport charges and government taxes) that don't apply to domestic travel.

Bruce Buchanan, the CEO of Australasia's low-cost carrier, Jetstar, has been a leader in the campaign to integrate the two countries aviation industries.

Cruising around Otaki

Otaki is about 2 hrs from Wanganui. It's famous for a very lovely river, great for whitewater canoeing.

It's a tourist area it seems. There are a lot of clothing retail outlets. The price of the goods isn't very competitive. A bit disappointing. Otaki stores seem to sell a lot of wool. Icebreaker is a top brand.

The road to the river is very scenic. Locals obviously put a lot of effort beautifying their gardens.

The river is a better venue than that beach. The Otaki beach is extremely windy.

The famous local grocery store New World is a prominent landmark

Otaki is a town in the Kapiti Coast District of the North Island of New Zealand, situated half way between the capital city Wellington, 70 kilometres to the southwest, and Palmerston North, 70 kilometres to the northeast. It marks the northernmost point of the Wellington Region. The town's population is 5600 (2001 Census). It is located on State Highway 1 and the North Island Main Trunk railway on their routes between Te Horo and Levin.

Back Road to Feilding, NZ

This is a back road sign you'd see if you're on a road trip from Feilding to Wanganui.

This is a scenic route but some farmers wouldn't want you to go over their properties. The river visible near this road is good for canoeing.

Feilding is known to be the "Most Beautiful Town" in New Zealand. I didn't see that. I prefer the hanging flower baskets in Wanganui. Fielding is quite smaller but I must say the houses around that area are quite impressive.

Auckland

Well Parnell is a lovely suburb. I can't help notice the multiple number of churches. Seemed like every corner, there was a church from different sects. I noticed that it's quite expensive to live a comfortable life in Parnell considering the income level of New Zealanders.

So I would recommend this book on New Zealand Property Market to those who are thinking of buying a house in NZ.

Parnell is home to many back packer accommodations and it's 5 mins taxi ride to the main Train Station.

I used the Overlander to travel from Auckland to Marton. It's quite a thrill for me as it was my first time to travel on a train for more than 4 hours, by myself.

Sure enough, the track was scenic but eventually I got tired of looking at green mountains.

The most beautiful scenery was that of Mt. Ruapehu.

Take note, Overlander doesn't run on Christmas day so be careful planning your holiday.

Overlander toilets is quite dirty and unpleasant but I guess that comes with age and lack of tourists...

Am hoping NZ will revitalize this transport facility.

Taranaki

These photos are taken from the Taranaki coast. The coast is a stretch of hundreds of kilometers of black fine sand beaches. Parts of the coast have a lot of drift woods, left along the shores from the NZ mountains.

The wind from the Tasman Sea is quite strong and sometimes small particles of sand get into your eyes, making it hard to see the wonderful sea.

I heard the beaches here have strong under current... hence it's not advisable for kids to swim in the beaches unattended.

New Plymouth

I loved New Plymouth when I visited it 3 days ago!

This coastal city has such a magnificent view. It felt like a little Sydney, without the famous bridge. I can imaging the effort that the New Plymouth city council put in to make a nice walk way by the beach. People can destress, relax, spend time with family and loved ones along the beach.

The are a lot of shops in town... offering cheap goods.

There are quite old establishments too, unfortunately, this one here has been ignored. It could be transformed into a grand hotel.

New Plymouth is 4 hours from Auckland and 4 hours from Wellington.

Palmerston North

Well, I must say, I was a bit disappointed to see Palmerston North... I was not very impressed with the malls. Palmerston north is supposed to be a city but it's not quite a city to me.

On the right is a picture of the Palmerston North public library.

Palmerston North is about 2 hours from Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand.

Palmerston North has a New Zealand embassy office in the middle of the city. The staff are professional and helpful.

Even if Palmerston North is not quite the city you'd expect it to be, it's still full of wonderful blossoming flowers and clean surroundings. This is just a manifestation of how much New Zealanders value their environment. A great place to live.

Winter Gardens, Wanganui New Zealand

These are just a few photos of the magnificent flowers I saw in the Winter Gardens at Victoria Park in New Zealand.

A lot of people have a walk around the park for leisure, picnic or quality time with family.

The "walk" is a nature tour of gigantic trees, multiple species of them. A man-made lake is situated at the middle of the park. There are ducks and white swans in the lake... for decorative purposes I suppose.

Such lucky people are the New Zealanders to be able to visit wonderful gardens like the winter gardens for free.

That's one of the best things in New Zealand, you can enjoy nature and convenience of a first world country. NZ is even rumored to have too much work life balance.

Well if you're up for this type of lifestyle, you might want to consider buying property in NZ.

Victorian Houses in New Zealand

I learned to appreciate timber Victorian style houses when I got to New Zealand. I admire the ornate designs and the detail that the builders put in to build a house... admirable even after 100 years.

To look for properties in New Zealand, I would often visit Trademe. Trademe is New Zealand's eBay. Trademe.co.nz is New Zealand's most famous auction website.

Have a look at the property on the left. That's a Victorian house.

A lot of beautiful houses are currently on sale at big discount due to the global recession.

Ohakune

I traveled to Ohakune, known as the gateway to Mt. Ruapehu a few days ago.

I noticed that there were so many cafes and restaurants that went bankrupt or were put in liquidation.

This is due to the seasonality of the businesses there. Many people would go to Ohakune for Skiing during winter.

A bit of trivia, the cast of Lord of the Rings stayed at Ohakune while filming the movie.

Living in New Zealand
